CANTI DELL’ESTASI / SONGS OF BLISS #02 : JS BACH ALLEMANDE

EN - August 2018, when I was still in Italy, I took the chance to record a series of sessions at the Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi in Bologna, which features a resounding acoustic and one of the most beautiful and oldest porches in the world. In this setting I took quick shootings of some original compositions that would later become the open collection Contemporary Raga using just two smartphones and a digital recording.

I also decided to take advantage of the ambiance to document some classical pieces I had been working on for a long time, mostly arias from the baroque era that fit the place so well. Among these a selection of JS Bach’s Partitas and Sonatas for violin solo adapted for the soprano saxophone as this Allemande opening the 2nd Partita in D Minor. I recently came to the decision to include it in the open collection Songs Of Bliss due to the particular nature of the context. Other tunes of this kind will be added in the future along with original compositions.

A note about the part of the video featuring a blossom almond tree, cut from footage taken during a hike on the bolognese hills by the end of the winter in 2019. This wild brush, caught by a small clearing at the Hermitage of Ronzano, possessed something inexplicable and magic that reminds me of Werner Herzog’s concept about ecstatic truths, when we refer to moments embedded with the luminous presence of some inner and subtle matter beyond the apparent one. It is the whirling spirit of nature alive that manifests to us eyeing from these rare instants, it’s our responsibility to catch it!

This performance is dedicated to the memory of my dear friend Gilles Marie-Paul Laheurte from NYC, architect and soprano saxophone player.

IT - Nell Agosto 2018, quando ero ancora in Italia, ho colto l'occasione per registrare una serie di sessioni presso la Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi a Bologna, caratterizzata da una straordinaria acustica e uno dei portici più belli e antichi del mondo. In questa cornice ho ripreso alcune composizioni originali che sarebbero poi diventate parte della collezione aperta Contemporary Raga utilizzando soltanto due smartphone e una registratore digitale.

Ho deciso di sfruttare l'atmosfera anche per documentare alcuni brani classici a cui lavoravo da tempo, per lo più arie di epoca barocca che si adattavano bene al luogo. Tra queste una selezione di movimenti scelti dalle Partite e Sonate per violino solo di JS Bach e adattate per sassofono soprano, come questa Allemanda che apre la Seconda Partita in Re minore. Ho deciso in seguito di inserirlo nella raccolta aperta Canti Dell'Estasi per la particolare natura del contesto. Altri brani di questo genere verranno aggiunti in futuro insieme a composizioni originali.

Un cenno alla sezione del video che presenta un mandorlo in fiore estratto da un videoclip di un escursione sui colli bolognesi alla fine dell'inverno del 2019. Questo arbusto selvatico, incontrato presso una piccola radura presso l'Eremo di Ronzano, emanava qualcosa di indecifrabile e magico che richiama il concetto della verità estatica di Werner Herzog, in riferimento a momenti nei quali una la presenza luminosa ci rivela una materia numinosa e sottile che trascende quella apparente. È lo spirito immanente della natura viva che si manifesta a noi occhieggiando da questi rari istanti ed è nostra responsabilità coglierli!
